BYU’s own American Idol

So the other day I was working at the desk in the library, and there was a patron at one of the two copy machines that are just opposite the desk. He must have been there for an hour already, as he had a gigantic stack of books next to him on his right, and was continually taking more out of the crate on his left. He was also listening to music on some headphones. At first I was just slightly irritated at his monopolizing the copier for so long.

But then he started to SING.

Loudly.

Not a whole song, just random little snatches of whatever song he was listening to at the time.

The first time he did it, I hoped he would realize his mistake and stop.

But he did it again.

And again.

Until finally I had to go up and ask him to stop singing because he was disturbing the other patrons.

Sheesh.

I had a co-worker who had an office right across the hall from mine. He would listen to music on his headphones and hum along with the music mimicing the bass line. I got so I could tell what song he was listening to. Sometimes I had to shut the door so I could concentrate. I’m not sure he even realized what he was doing!

    OH WELL!!!

I had a roommate while I was at BYU who aspired to be a Broadway singer or something. He’d go into his room and crank up a cover by some famous male Broadway singer of “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, and he’d sing along at the top of his lungs. It was the same song every day. I already hated it, but I grew to hate it even more. And although he had a decent singing voice, whenever he sang this in his room he sounded somehow ‘off’ and it drove me NUTS. Man, I was glad when that year ended.

I grew up in a house with a sister who loved Barbard Streisand, playing her tapes every morning while in the shower (very loudly so as to overcome the shower noise). This went on for months and months. Now none of the rest of the siblings (5 in all) can stand to even see Barbara let along hear her sing! A permanenly imprinted aversion to Barbara.
