Angua ROX my SOX. She just used What’s Up, Doc? on the Debate Thread as R/H evidence. Angua, you do know that What’s Up, Doc? is the Bytheway cult film, and that we have the whole thing memorized? That my brother’s blog is at vrusp.com (standing for Vocal Reverberation Under Spinal Pressure), and therefore a What’s Up, Doc? reference?

So, Angua, Barbara Streisand’s character is named Judy, and Ryan O’Neal’s is Howard (although she calls him Steve).

Oh, and your post was good, too. Excellent actually.

Preference Pictures

April 7th, 2003 · 4 Comments

‘Cause I didn’t feel like doing homework, I decided to upload some of the pics from Preference. Enjoy.

The ladies
From right to left, we are: My sister Lisa, me, My roommate Jen, and my sister Laura.

The ladies again
Same pic as above, different lighting.

The group
Alright, from right to left again. Front row– Jason, Laura, Me, Lisa. Back row–Jeremy, Jen, Josh, and Tyler. Yes, Tyler’s the only guy who’s name doesn’t start with a J. It wasn’t planned.

Lisa and Tyler
Lisa with her date, Tyler.

Lisa by herself
Lisa by herself. Isn’t she cute?

Josh and Jeremy
My date, Josh, with Jen’s date, Jeremy. Yes, Josh is trying to lick his boutonneire. I don’t know why.

Oh, and since I know some of you are curious, I made Josh’s butonniere and Jason’s. Jen made Jeremy’s and Tyler’s.

I’ve got more pics, but they haven’t been scanned yet. What do you think?

NOTE: If the columns are overlapping the pictures, just right-click on the pictures and view them in their own window. I don’t know how to fix it any other way.

Did I just have a weekend?

April 7th, 2003 · 5 Comments

I’m getting better at typing without my middle finger. Although what this will mean when I’m all healed up, I haven’t decided.

My dad told us last night that he’s buying all four of us kids notebook computers as an end-of-the-Project present (he’s been working on a consulting project for the last 4 years). I was flabbergasted. I won’t say that I’m spoiled rotten, but I certainly have better parents than I deserve. This means that I’ll most likely be selling Ginny, if I *can* sell her. One of my co-workers has expressed an interest. Since her battery is dead, I won’t be able to get as much out of her as I’d like, but we’ll see what happens.

This weekend was busy, but very nice. Conference weekend is always wonderful– there’s nothing like hearing counsel from the Prophet and the Apostles. I’m still trying to recover from Ladies’ Night at Deseret Book, though.

Fun with floral clippers

April 3rd, 2003 · 3 Comments

I had quite an adventure today. Teri, I know stuff like this makes you squeamish, so you might want to skip this part–but I’ll try to be as un-graphic as possible.

In Floral Design we were doing formal centerpieces with candles, and I was snipping the head off a rose when I got bumped slightly and ended up snipping the top of my middle finger on my left hand–cut a nice little flap. At first I couldn’t believe what I’d just done, but then it started bleeding profusely, and I had to go get the teacher who ran for the First Aid kit (not the first time a thing like this has happened, I’m sure). While she was wrapping my finger I started to feel light-headed and my hearing started going out, so I hurried and sat down. Once my hearing came back I attended to trying to get the bleeding to stop. About 15 minutes later it did, and I continued with my arrangement. :) It’s beautiful, but my teacher thought I was crazy.

Anyway, after class was over I went to the library and asked if I could miss work to go to Instacare (not quite the emergency room–it’s for minor emergencies) to see if I might need stitches. They let me off, of course, and my sister drove me over. Instead of stitches, they used that new glue. It’s supposed to last for ten days. It had been more than 5 years since my last tetanus shot (when I sliced my finger with a rotary fabric cutter in 9th grade), so I got one of those too.

So now I’ve got this big bandage on my finger, which is actually making it rather difficult to type (so excuse any typos, please–I’ve already used the backspace button more than usual, and since it’s my most-used key, that’s saying something). It’s certainly going to make testing Triple Swing tomorrow an interesting exercise, to say nothing of typing my term papers. It hurts a little, but not as much as I thought it would.

Now, for anyone who’s interested, here’s more than you ever wanted to know about my name. . .

Crunch Time

April 2nd, 2003 · 6 Comments

In less than a month, my undergraduate college career will be over. In the next 3 weeks, I have two 8 to 10-page research papers due. I also need to at least make a pretense of studying for my Floral Design and Pearl of Great Price finals, practice my dances for my World Dance and Social Dance finals, and read the books that I only kind of skimmed over so that I don’t totally bomb my Novel of Empire final. At least I don’t have to study for a final in my Jane Austen class (not that I would have anyway)– the teacher decided that we don’t have enough time to read Persuasion AND write our papers if we’re going to have a proper final, so rather than cut down on the book, he cut out the final. He said “I’d like to be able to say that I’m being extremely merciful to you, but actually, I realized that if you didn’t *take* a final, I wouldn’t have to *grade* a final.” So hip-hip-hooray. He also extended the paper deadline a week, so instead of having two papers due on the 14th and 15th, I have one due on the 14th and one due on the 21st. As usual, I’ve put off doing much on either of them until the last minute, so I’m also going to be reading a lot of crticism on Jane Austen (I’m doing my Novel of Empire paper on Mansfield Park as well). I also have to go to a Ballroom Dance Company concert and a Folk Dance company concert, on the 11th and the 12th.

All of this, and all I want to do is read fanfic and write fanfic. And maybe play in the nice weather.

Except we’re not really *having* nice weather at the moment. General Conference (for the LDS Church) is coming up this weekend, and, as usual, there weather’s turned nasty. It always turns nasty on Conference weekend. It’s not freezing, but it’s all cloudy and windy and threatening to rain.

Anyway, Lou, it’s a good thing that you’re having trouble with AP15, because I don’t think I’m going to be able to beta it until after graduation– which is April 25.

Obviously many people have been feeling the same way as me, as I’ve gotten depressingly few comments of late. I’ve even tried to make entries that people will comment on, and nothing. Are all you blog people boycotting me because I got an LJ?

I’ve got a lot of procrastinating ahead of me, though. I’ve got a bad case of Senioritis, it’s most obvious symptom being Spring Fever.

Sigh.

Alphabet Meme

April 1st, 2003 · No Comments

I like R.J. Anderson’s version of the alphabet meme the best so far, so that’s the one I’m going to use.

With a few changes.
Alphabet Meme

Act your age?: Sometimes younger, most of the time older. I think.
Born on what day of the week?: Wednesday.
Chore you hate?: All of them? Um, washing dishes is probably what I hate the most. It’s a never-ending task.
Dad’s Name: David.
Essential make-up item: Mascara I suppose.
Favorite Actor/Actress: Jeremy Northam. I don’t really have a favorite actress.
Gold or Silver?: Silver. Definitely.
Hand you write with?: Right.
Instruments you play?: Piano, passably. I pretended to play the violin for 4 years. I also play a mean kazoo.
Job title?: Student about to be thrown out into the real world.
Kids?: Someday, I hope.
Living arrangements?: A six-girl BYU-approved cinder-block-constructed apartment that only has 4 other people at the moment, two of whom are my sisters.
Make of vehicle?: Toyota Corolla, named Lizzy.
Number of people you’ve slept with?: None. And proud of it.
Overnight hospital stays?: Two nights in a sleep center, where I got no sleep whatsover. How do the expect you to sleep with cords and oxygen monitors and finger monitors and blood pressure cuffs that go off every 5 minutes? Sheesh.
Phobias?: I don’t like spiders.
Quote you like?: “I cannot speak well enough to be unintelligible.” Cathrine Morland, Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen.
Rock Groups?: Do Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and the Monkees count? Good. Other music groups would definitely include The Real Group.
Siblings?: One older brother and two younger sisters, both of whom happen to be twins.
Time you wake up?: 7:30-8:30 weekdays and Sundays, as late as possible Saturdays.
Unique habit?: After I take my shower in the morning, I go back to bed for anywhere from 15-45 minutes. I’ll explain the reasoning behind this if anyon is curious.
Vegetable you refuse to eat?: Spinach. I’m sure there are more, but that’s all I can think of at the moment.
Worst habit?: If ‘worst’ means ‘most time-consuming,’ then it’s the Internet. If it means ‘most detrimental,’ then it’s procrastination, which is what I’m doing right now.
X-Rays you’ve had?: Umm. Teeth mostly. I think I’ve also had a couple of leg/ankle x-rays and a throat one to determine if I need to get my tonsils out (I do).
Yummy food you make?: Molasses sugar cookies, spice cake, fajitas, chicken pot pie, Schezwan chicken, and lots of other good stuff.
Zodiac sign?: Gemini.

April Fool’s Day fun

April 1st, 2003 · 2 Comments

I won’t bother doing any kind of an “I’m now an H/H’er” joke, because that’s been done to death.

So I was 20 minutes late to my Austen class today because I spent almost all of last night checking new messages on the Draco’s Quill forums instead of writing my presentation paper that was due today. I actually would have been on time, but I spent the first twenty minutes of my free half-hour doing the same thing. It’s just far too much fun. I’ve been trying to annoy “Draco Malfoy” so much that he’ll change my title, but so far he’s ignored me.

I did get a PM from Harry Potter, though. He sent me a lovely kiss.

*sigh* 80 days. . . .

What to say?

March 29th, 2003 · No Comments

Am at work.

Am bored.

Half an hour left to go.

Have written half a page of I Found Love 3. Am stuck. Want to write chapter 6 but must write a lot of stuff before we can get there. Want to write ch. 3 too, but am stuck.

Beta-read Ancient Prophecy 14. Loaded it onto Yahoo! group. Am now caught up. Don’t feel guilty for wanting to write IFL.

Am ignoring homework.

Have several overdue library books. Wouldn’t be so bad if didn’t WORK in library. Heh.

Am finding writing without personal pronouns quite fun, actually.

Going now.

Well *that* was embarrassing. . .

March 27th, 2003 · 7 Comments

For those of you who don’t know, I work at the Humanities/Religion reference desk at my college library. So today I was talking with my two supervisors and the other student reference assistant about various subjects, which (as it often does at BYU) lead to dating, which is not really a field I’ve had much experience in lately. My supervisor then began a topic we have discussed before: a certain patron named Derek.

Now, Derek and I have done a bit of what you might call flirting, but not really. When I was working 8 hour days over the spring and summer terms, he used to come up to the 5th floor practically every day. At first I thought I knew him from high school, but I think it’s just because I saw him so often. He would tell me “hi” and joke about how I always seemed to be there, and I would tell him “hi” and do the same back. When fall semester came around we still saw each other quite often. I did some snooping after he came to the desk to check out one of our desk copies of the MLA style manual, and I found out his last name (which I can’t remember anymore, of course) and where he was from (which I can’t remember anymore either).

Anyway, I haven’t seen him a whole lot lately because he changed his major and hasn’t come to the 5th floor so often. Mary (my supervisor) caught me talking with him one day and has since told me two or three times that I should ask him out. I don’t really do that very much anymore, having asked guys out a few too many times without having any of them return the gesture. But Joanne (my other supervisor) had never heard about this particular patron, so we were talking about him. It just so happened that I was down on the 4th floor fixing a jam in the copier (we look after that copier as the closest reference desk) and he walked by, so I told Mary I’d seen him just that day. We were still talking about him when I glanced over–and saw him walking our way. Yikes.

Now don’t get me wrong. Derek is a nice guy, from all I can tell, and if he asked me out I’d probably say yes. But he’s never shown any interest in doing so.

Anyway,he said “Hi, again,” and started walking past, but then he stopped, turned around, and came back to ask me a question. I showed him a few sources that would help him out nicely, and he said “Emily, you’ve saved me again.” I couldn’t really stand there and watch him look stuff up, so I went back to the desk. Mary was saying “you should have stayed over there!” and Joanne was saying “Go and ask him if that was helpful! It’s called following up!” and Richard (the other student assistant) offered to get up and tell him to ask me out, which of course I flatly refused. Shortly thereafter Derek left, which made Mary think that he’d made up the question just to have a chance to talk to me.

Mary also now thinks that we need to talk about him more so he’ll come back more often, and has threatened to tell him to ask me out next time I see him.

Yikes.

In other news, today’s floral design lab was fun. We did Oriental arrangements. I’ve got 3 irises, a spider mum, a few sprigs of heather, a snake tail/horse grass, some statice, ming fern and galax leaves in mine. I don’t have any film in my camera at the moment, so I don’t know how I’ll take a picture. Maybe I’ll borrow the digital camera of one of my friends in the complex. Or I guess I could just buy more film.
