An update.

So yesterday my sisters and I were walking through the BYU bookstore, and I walked around a corner–and found myself face to face with Sexy Elf Boy. And Sexy Ranger Man. Yes, they had the LotR standees.

Laura bought Aragorn. Lisa bought (through me, she’ll pay me BAX) Legolas. They’re now set up in their apartment window (hee). And they’re BEAUTIFUL.

If I had room, I’d buy a Sexy Elf Boy too. Sadly, I do not. *sigh* I couldn’t blog about it until today, ’cause they wanted to surprise their friend and she maybe sometimes reads my blog.

I got my Nimbus PIX developed today! There are some really great ones. I’ll be posting them as soon as I can get them scanned. I siriusly considered getting a photo CD to save me the time of scanning them, but I just couldn’t part with another $8 a pop. :)

The lady who told me about my job called me today to tell me congratulations. I thanked her profusely, of course. She said that everyone is so impressed with me that they’re already trying to find me a permanent full-time job with benefits. And I haven’t even worked a single hour for them! That’s a lot to live up to. Yikes.

Hmm. Anything else interesting? I’m tired. I have to get up again at 6:00. Am REALLY not looking forward to that.

Worst thing is that once I start work, I’ll have to get up that early every day.

Oh, yuck.

My friends. . .

you are reading the blog of an employee of the State of Utah! Yup, I got the job. Full time. Wahoo!

I’ll be working at the counter on the first floor in the mornings– working the switchboard, counting and logging payments, opening and sorting mail, etc. In the afternoon, I’ll be up on the 4th floor, calling doctors to verify that they’ll be at their malpractice hearings, helping with filing and shredding, and other clerical stuff. Not extremely exciting, but it pays well: $9.48 an hour. And they’ll pay for my light rail pass as well. It’s partially a temporary position, so I don’t know how long it will last, and no benefits, but it’s a great foot in the door.

I’m exhausted, though. Ed Week really takes it out of you.

So. What did I do today?

August 18th, 2003 · 3 Comments

Umm. Not what I was planning on, that’s for sure. Got very little done. But it was still a good day. Why?

Because I think I have a job! I have another interview tomorrow morning, so I’ll have to tell you how it went. Basically, there is more than one opening in the department, and if I don’t get the job I interviewed for originally, I’ll get the other one. So it’s all good. :)

After my interview I’m going to go to Education Week, so I don’t know how soon or how much I’ll be on. I’ll update ASAP, though. Maybe I’ll run to the library on a break. :)

I am *tired*

August 16th, 2003 · 2 Comments

2 days of working can really wear you out. It wasn’t so bad yesterday even though it was an 8-hour shift. But today was interminable. I wanted to be at home at about 3:30, which was *really* bad considering that I started at 3:00. I didn’t even want to read very much, which I can usually do when we’re slow. I was thinking near the end that the sound of the register printing out a credit card reciept will forever be etched in my memory. The evening was broken up only by one of my old high-school friends coming in to buy a present for her father. I’ve worked at Deseret Book for more than 3 years now, and tonight was the first time I’ve felt like if I never go back again I wouldn’t care.

I’d really miss the discount, though.

I *did* get another plot bunny, so the night wasn’t entirely wasted. This is a short one, I think– something I can polish off while trying to get research and background done of my Dumbledore fic.

On Monday I need to sit down without distractions and do some sirius work on that editing job. Education Week starts on Tuesday, and I won’t get any time to do it during Ed Week. I really don’t want to leave this thing any longer. So instead of sitting in front of the TV, I’m going to stay in my room. Instead of keeping my eye on my LJ friend’s page, I’m going to take my wireless network card out. I think that, without distractions, I can finish Romans. (I’m editing a commentary on the writings of Paul in the New Testament). The next bit, 1 Corinithians, is the longest section– almost twice as long as Romans. After that there’s 3 more sections, each about half as long as Romans. So I really need to get going on this thing.

One thing it’s taught me, though, is that I don’ t have the self-discipline to be a freelance *anything.* I need more structure.

And now, I’m going to bed.

Wow.

August 14th, 2003 · 3 Comments

I have literally been out of the house since 10:30 this morning, so I missed the whole blackout saga. Apparently there are still places without power. To all you people suffering on the East Coast and in Canada– I hope you get power soon. I’d hate to be living on the top floor of one of those 100-story apartment buildings. Yuck.

So what kept me away all day? Well, I was woken up at about 9 this morning, which was much earlier than I was planning on since I had been up till 3:30 reading The Corinthian (great book! Sir Richard is so Sir Percy Blakeney), by my mom saying that a lady in our stake had just called. Apparently there was a part-time job opening where she worked, and I could get an interview if I could make it by 11. The job is with the State of Utah, in the licensing department. My job would be filing, a bit of clerical stuff, and answering calls from people with complaints about their doctors, dentists, contractors, etc. I’m incredibly overqualified for it, but jobs are so scarce right now that I’ll take it if they offer it to me. I’d still be able to work weekends at Deseret Book, and between the two jobs I’d be almost at full time.

After the interview my mom (who had given me a ride downtown so I could avoid paying for parking) and I ran a few errands, then went out to the LDS Bookseller’s Convention. I helped her walk around to all the different vendors and explain a new process for vendors to upload images and descriptions to the Deseret Book website. Along the way we got a whole bunch of freebies. I like freebies. :)

As soon as we finished at the convention, we drove down to American Fork and attended a temple session. My cousin Patrick was going through to get his own endowments, and we wanted to be there with him. It was a very nice session, and I was glad that I got to go.

After the session we went with my grandparents and aunt to the Purple Turtle to get some food. We just barely got home.

I am REALLY tired. I won’t be staying up reading Heyer tonight. At least, not very late.

Another one bites the dust. . .

Just got back from a wedding–one more of my high school friends. He wasn’t in my class, he was a year older. But still. Most of my close group of friends are now married. *sigh*

Spent the night getting dragged around by Rosie again. Man, that kid has energy.

Got a fair amount of worx done on the editing project today. Tomorrow I’m going to do it while I’m *not* watching Fellowship of the Ring extended edition with the cast commentary. Orlando Bloom is entirely too funny on that thing.

And entirely too pretty. Yum.

Alright, EVERYONE needs to go to Fox News. The photos on this article are. . .well. . .

Just look at the caption on the bottom photo. Think about it for a second.

Haikus made from my LJ/BLog:

My first attempt:

along the way we
have in canon snape is not
surprising it was

This one’s very profound, methinks:

to live stealing one
of the fandom it would turn
itself off even

I think this one’s my favorite, though:

up we were going to
start saving now for nimbus
wherever it’s going

And now I’m going to do some serious editing. Which reminds me: There’s a new edition of the Chicago Manual of Style! This is both a good thing and a bad thing. The good thing is that it is now updated to join the electronic age in all its influences on the publishing world: both in electronic journals and publications and the way books are printed. They also put in a section on American grammar and usage.

The bad thing is that I now have to buy a new one, and it’s $55! And I just bought my old one for the same amount not a year and a half ago. Grrr.

Weekend Redux

August 12th, 2003 · 2 Comments

I’ve been absent from my blog for quite a long while, I see. I didn’t really mean it to happen that way. Oh, well.

My reunion Saturday was a blast. I was quite surprised to find out how many of my classmates were married. The vast majority of those who came seemed to be, if not married, then at least engaged. Anywhere outside of Utah I’m sure this would be the exception rather than the rule, but we Mormons tend to marry young. I was one of the few who had already graduated from college, as well.

I spent a lot of the reunion being led around by my best friend’s almost-3-year-old daughter, who seemed to decide that *I* was her mommy that day. Nicole’s husband had to work, or he could have kept an eye on her, but since he wasn’t around I got the job. Not that I really minded much– Rosie is an adorable little girl. And it’s nice to be appreciated, even if it is as someone who can go on the slides with a 3-year-old. :)

It seems incredible to me that it’s already been five years, but it was even stranger to see so many faces that were once so familiar. I used to see these people every day; now it was all I could do to find out where they were going to school, or how long they had been married, or how old their baby was. *sigh* Everything changes.

I finished reading The Grand Sophy on Sunday, and read the entirety of Sylvester today. I must say that I’m enjoying Georgette Heyer every bit as much as Angua said I would. It’s really too bad that she’s been categorized as a romance author, because her books are really more comedic than romantic. At least, the ones I’ve read so far are.

Anyway, that’s why I’ve been away from blog lately. I’ve been too busy reading Heyer. :)

Simply had to make more Pirates icons.

If anyone can think of any good text for the new Jack one, let me know. I thought of “Bleargh,” but I’m just not sure. . .
